NEGATIVE TRAITS OF COCKER SPANIELS

One of the most difficult to deal with aspects of Cocker Spaniels is their tendency toward numerous serious health conditions; and they are one of the riskiest breeds in terms of medical problems. While hip dysplasia is a problem common to many purebreds in general, there are also many other concerns in a Cocker Spaniel. Conditions which you should be aware of prior to purchasing your puppy include the possibility of congenital deafness, Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia, Autoimmune Thyroiditis, hypothyroidism, the skin problems of primary seborrhea, skin problems from food allergies, and urinary tract problems. They are also susceptible to numerous eye problems. Obtaining a health certificate from the breeder after a full health exam is advised, as well as regular visits to your veterinarian after you have purchased your puppy.
As the Cocker Spaniel is a very social breed, they often have a tendency toward separation anxiety-- left alone too long or too frequently may result in whining and barking, other displays of behavioral problems, and destruction of whatever is in their environment. Some display defensive reactions when corrected; and many will do more than their share of barking.
Due to the nature of their long coats, a Cocker Spaniel does a significant amount of shedding, some of which can be eased by daily brushing and regular bathing. But this may not be the right breed for you if you object to dog hair on your furniture, carpets, and hands.
Cocker Spaniels also have a distinctive odor from their skin and ears. While it cannot be completely eliminated, it can be reduced by frequent bathing and frequent cleaning of your dog's ears.
Some Cocker Spaniels have unstable temperaments, which can include such factors as neurotic behaviors, aggressiveness, biting, moodiness and nastiness. As this is generally the result of breeders who do not know how to breed good-tempered dogs, it is best if you can meet with the breeders in person and view how their Cocker Spaniels interact amongst themselves and with people; if this is not possible, try to get recommendations from the breeder's other customers.
In general, if you keep these factors in mind, the positive characteristics of your puppy will outweigh the negative traits.
