AN OVERVIEW FOR FINDING A COCKER SPANIEL BREEDER

Author:
C. Covington

If you wish to purchase a purebred Cocker Spaniel, your first stop should be the American Kennel Club.  The AKC is one of the best resources which can assist you in locating reputable breeders, honest pricing of these dogs, and a host of other important information.  While the AKC cannot ethically advise you to purchase your Cocker Spaniel from any one particular breeder, it does offer information about breeder locater services and breed clubs which can, in turn, point you toward listings of breeders.

The state-by-state listings on the breeder referral list are all members of, but not endorsed by, the American Spaniel Club.  You can find this listing at http://www.asc-cockerspaniel.org/breed/breeders.html

When requesting information from a breeder, it is important to remember to find out if the puppy has had its shots, has been dewormed, and has had a health examination.  Other factors to consider are whether they are registered with the American Kennel Club;  whether its pedigree papers are readily available to you;   and also, if you will be picking up your puppy in person, if you can have the chance to view and briefly interact with its parents.  In instances where it is necessary to purchase your puppy from a breeder who is at a distance, it is important to verify the additional shipping costs.  Many breeders also wish to know whether you are purchasing the puppy as a pet or for breeding purposes.

Current research shows that the minimum for a female purebred Cocker Spaniel is $250.  (In general, female purebreds are a little more expensive than male puppies).  Ellie's Pups (417-255-0227), which is located in West Plains, Missouri, offers Cocker Spaniels at this rate, in addition to a few other breeds.  Shots, deworming, health exam, and a health certificate are all included.

Low-priced male puppies--  $200-- can be found at Springers By Pam Giorgio (502-349-6298), located in Bardstown, Kentucky.  She states that the price is negotiable.

Stacey's Spaniels, in Petersburg, Indiana, (812-354-3164),  has a number of home-raised Cocker Spaniels for sale, ranging from $350- $400.  While Stacey charges an extra $350 for shipping, she states that she is willing to personally deliver your puppy to you, at $10 per hour of driving.

From Ardmore, Oklahoma, Mbz3 Boxers N Cockers ((580-223-4549) only breed their pair once per year, ensuring the best possible care of their dogs.  Their rates are $500- $550, with shipping included.

For a great selection of Cocker Spaniels, the puppies bred by Cherri and Joe Overlease of C & J Cockers (417-452-2781)  in Miller, Missouri, have a beautiful variety of colorings.  They will either ship your puppy to you or deliver it in person.  Their current rate is $500+ for males, $600+ for females.  They also microchip all puppies prior to sale.

If none of the above breeders meet with your specifications, you can also check http://puppydogweb.com/breeders/cockerspaniel.htm  for further listings.

NEGATIVE TRAITS OF GERMAN SHEPHERDS
There are a number of factors which could illustrate that a German Shepherd might not be the best type of dog for you.  First and foremost, if you or your family do not have the time, or might not be inclined, to give your new pet a large amount of attention, and make him a consistent part of your everyday lives, a German Shepherd may not be the best choice.  This breed needs to feel included, and to feel useful.  Although the German Shepherd can do well living in an apartment, he needs a significant amount of exercise, with walking, running, and playtime.  This breed also does not like being left alone, so this also should be taken into consideration if you are thinking about adopting a German Shepherd. Training a German Shepherd should take place when he is young;  otherwise he will have a tendency to become either timid or aggressive.  Part of his training should include exposure to other people, or he will have difficulty ascertaining...
