A Labrador's Purpose in the World

Author:
C. Covington

Labradors serve a purpose in the world besides being a household pet to many families. These dogs are trained to be multi-tasked in various things from being cadaver dogs and even more when they’re used by the DEA (Drug Enforcement Agency) and INS (Immigration and Naturalization Service) Border Patrol agents for drug and bomb sniffing at U.S. ports and major city airports. Labradors have an excellent sense of smell and this is beneficial to law enforcement when products are brought over to the states from other places as a security measure. Labradors are also trained as assistance dogs for hearing impaired people to be their ears for phones and other sounds and to indicate to them of sounds through gentle nuzzling and using their body to motion to a deaf person of sounds around them that they can’t hear.

They are also trained as seeing-eye dogs for the blind because of their excellent hearing since they have to be the eyes and extra set of ears for a blind person. Because of their excellent hearing skills this provides extra security for the visually impaired. This keeps them from being hit by cars crossing the street and steering them out of danger’s way. These dogs are given extensive training to be used in touch therapy for abuse victims, autistic children and senior citizens. Some facilities will provide touch therapy to its patients and residents because of the therapeutic benefits a Labrador’s presence brings to people.

A Labrador’s pleasant and playful demeanor is a comfort to those who live alone primarily with the elderly. You will find this breed having older people who own them for companionship since it’s been noted that depression affecting senior citizens who live alone is reduced when they have a companion around especially if it’s a dog. It has been said that people who live with animals especially the elderly or single people tend to be less depressed and are much more upbeat and cheerful because Labradors are good at being loyal companions and are protective of their owners alerting them if something is going on by them barking or whimpering and running around a certain way.

Those who own Labradors can say that they found a loyal and reliable pet that fits their environment very well. Labradors also tend to pick their owners out and this is where Labradors learn how they fit in by sensing what kind of person their owners are whether they come from a breeder or the pound if they’re being adopted out after a potential owner has been selected. Labradors think they’re human and can almost feel the same emotions as a human being. That’s why they’re the most coveted of housedogs because of their ability to feel and react like a human being with the same type of emotions. Labradors can even tell when their owners are sad or happy by just sniffing them out even if they don’t show it on their faces. In the end Labradors are what you call the devoted companion of mankind.
