  BECOMING A NEW PET OWNER

Author:
C. Covington

One of the first factors to take into consideration before you purchase your new German Shepherd puppy is to realize that you are making a lifetime commitment to your prospective pet.  For this breed of dog, the lifespan is generally twelve to thirteen years.  Decide in advance if you are willing--  and able--  to make this type of longterm commitment to your dog:  to provide him with a secure home, all of the necessary feeding and medical expenses, and, equally important, to ensure that you are willing to give him all of time and attention that he will need.
Also assess whether this type of dog will fit into your current lifestyle and future plans.

Next, find out as much as you can about this particular breed of dog, and assess whether you're certain that it is the right type for you. Talk with breeders, and ask for input from other German Shepherd owners.  Factors to consider are whether you prefer a puppy or an older dog, a male or a female,  and if you would consider a mixed-breed or only a purebred.  Both reputable breeders and owners are likely to be willing to assist you in making these decisions, based on their own experiences, but ultimately the final decision is up to you.  If you ask questions of a breeder from whom you intend to purchase your dog, be prepared for questions from him or her, also--  reputable breeders want to know that they are placing their puppies in a good home, with someone who who will love them and take good care of them!

When you have decided on the puppy or dog you want, get all relevant information in writing from the breeder.  This includes a health certificate, fees for the sale, pedigree papers if applicable, and the registration application for the American Kennel Club.  You should also have chosen a veterinarian for your pet.

Next, prepare your home, yourself and your family for the new addition.  This includes such factors as “puppy-proofing” the area where he will stay, planning his schedule for feeding and exercise, and purchasing such items as his food, collar and leash, and toys.

Upon bringing him home, help him to adjust as quickly and easily as possible by making him feel like a part of the family and that your home is where he belongs.  Introduce other people and pets slowly.  Accustom him to what will be his daily routine, and stick to it as much as possible.  Set rules for his household behavior, letting him know what is expected of him, and what is and is not acceptable;  and be consistent.  Be your German Shepherd's friend, and enjoy him!

Akita Breeders
Akita Breeders Once you have decided to bring home an Akita puppy, you must carefully decide where you will get your new little friend.  Many people choose to purchase their Akita from a breeder.  Buying from a responsible breeder helps ensure that you know where your dog is coming from.  Knowing about the Akita parents will give you some insight as to your dog’s future as an adult.  Price is an important factor for everyone when looking for a puppy to buy.  Most breeders offer purebred Akita puppies, with shots and vaccinations for $500-$1500.  The price will vary depending on the sex, colors and markings on the dog.  Additionally, a puppy bred from two champion Akitas will bring a higher price than a puppy born to average parents with no show experience.  To some new owners this will make a difference, especially if they intend to show or breed the puppy they take home. The internet offers many sources for...
