Breeding and showing your Yorkshire terrier

The Yorkie originated as a rat hunting replacement for Scottish terriers in the English industrial revolution. Then breeders and fanciers in the United States and over seas decided that the smaller size with longer hair was preferred for showing, and soon the Yorkie grew into the tiny dog with the lavishly long coat that it is today.
Competing in dog shows
Showing Yorkies is very specialized and time consuming and only for the really dedicated enthusiasts. It has been said this particular breed requires more human companionship and attention than any other. The more attention Yorkies receive the better, as they seem to lavish in every second of it.
Eager, energetic, and intelligent, this is a very enthusiastic breed and is both affectionate and loyal, although these dogs can sometimes be quite demanding. They are small dogs so make sure the collar is not too heavy and that they are fed the proper amount of food – small dogs have small bellies!
If Yorkshire Terriers are being shown the coat is usually protected, by being rolled up in curling papers. Although because Yorkies do not shed, maintenance of their coat is not as pertinent between shows as it is for other breeds. Good nutrition will pretty much take care of that for you.
All breeds can and do benefit from basic obedience training, and even if showing your Yorkie doesn’t seem like a long term idea for you, they will definitely benefit from even just a few shows and little training. One valuable thing your Yorkie could pick up is how to quiet down a little quicker – an excellent skill for any dog to have, but most especially Yorkies.

A weekly ear check-up is a must for the Maltese. Indicators of ear problems include sensitivity to touch, heavy wax build-up, shaking or scratching of the ears, and tilting the head from side to side. These conditions generally are indicative of an infection or ear mites and requires the attention of a Veterinarian.
To prevent ear infections, the excessive hair in and around the ear canal also needs to be removed regularly. This can be performed at home with grooming scissors. However, many Maltese shake their heads and move about in an attempt to get away. Oftentimes, ear grooming will require an extra set of hands to hold the dog still.
