  FINDING A GOOD VETERINARIAN

Author:
C. Covington

One of your first priorities in assisting your new German Shepherd in having a long, healthy, happy life, is to find the best possible veterinarian.  Finding the right vet who will deal with your dog's routine and emergency healthcare is very important, but need not be a difficult or extremely time-consuming process.  It is preferable to select a vet prior to bringing your puppy home, if possible.

The first step in your search for a veterinarian is to ask other pet owners about theirs.  Such a recommendation, however, should include as much information as they can relate, in terms of why they are satisfied with their choice of vet.  Try to get as many recommendations as possible, keeping in mind that each pet owner will likely have his or her own personal style and preferences, and you need to find one whose style and preferences best match your own.  You can also gain this information from pet stores, and possibly even from the breeders from whom you are purchasing your German Shepherd puppy.  Some important factors to take into consideration are the prospective vet's location, business hours, and means of dealing with emergencies after regular business hours;  as well as checking with the vet's office to ask about their payment rates and policies.  You will also want a vet who intends to continue his practice and will be there during your dog's lifespan.

Your next step should be to schedule a visit to the vet's office.  There, you can assess two important factors in whether this may be the best vet for you:  first, check to see how clean and orderly the office and treatment areas are, and whether it is satisfactory to your expectations;  and second, chat with the staff to ensure that they are knowledgeable and helpful.

Yo u will also want to meet with the veterinarian himself to find out such details as his credentials, how long he has been practicing veterinary medicine, what his policies are in regard to any emergency services your puppy may need during periods of time when he is not personally available.  Equally important is his personal style in how he relates to both pets and pet owners--  does he take the time to fully answer all of your questions and explain what you don't understand;  does he express sincere interest in the pets, calling them by name, and showing a positive, friendly attitude?  If his style is both professional and friendly, this is one good sign that he may be the right vet for you.

If all of these factors prove satisfactory to you, you will want to take your new pet in for a visit.  Note how the vet and his staff interacts with your puppy in person--  if they show genuine interest and concern, you have likely found the best “doctor” for your new canine friend.

The sleek look and sweet demeanor that made Yorkies a show stopper
Yorkshire Terriers are adored all over the world and, in the past few years, have proven statistically to be one of the most popular and sought after toy breed. Although today they are most commonly kept as house pets or parade their spunk down the show dog aisle, back in the 1800’s these diminutive terriers were bred for rat hunting. The attitude that made them popular Yorkshire Terriers are well known for their excellent temperament and sweet nature, ranging through boldness, intelligence, socialization and independence.  They tend to be quite affectionate, share close bonds with the family, while being lively, intelligent, aggressive towards strangers and tolerant of children, if they are not overly teased or their territory encroached upon. Yorkshire Terriers are popular pets for individuals who usually suffer from pet allergies, as their high-maintenance coat is virtually non-shedding.  These petite sweets are courageous, devoted little dogs...
