Fitting your Labrador for a collar

Author:
C. Covington

Labradors should have collars and halters that are properly fitted for their size because a lot of owners second-guess when selecting a collar out for their dog. Since Labradors have a tendency to fluxuate in weight gain and loss it’s ideal to find collars and halters that allow you to adjust accordingly. Tight or poor fitting collars can set up a Labrador for skin rashes and infections because it causes the strap to rub into their neck which can over time lead to imbedding and can become infected. Going to a reputable pet store like PetSmart and PetCo will help you to make an informed decision about having your dog properly fitted for a collar and a leash. Labradors tend to move quickly when walking so it’s ideal to have a properly fitted leash so they’re not constantly dragging their owner up the street or have a tendency to move faster than their owner’s walking speed because that can cause the dog to choke on its collar and dogs can injure their larynx if they yank themselves hard enough from dragging their owner up the street.

When you train a new puppy always get them fitted with collars that allows them to be adjusted as they grow so they’re growing into a collar and getting accustomed to wearing one along with a leash. Too many dog owners don’t stop and speak to someone to what is an appropriate size collar and leash for an average size Labrador retriever. Labradors actually enjoy walks so you don’t have to worry about this type of dog really dragging you up the street and hurting you, but them as well. It’s easier to consult with a pet store or even calling up a breeder who can tell you what an appropriate length and how to size your dog into a proper collar and leash, so as it grows from a puppy to adult so that you know how to size the dog up appropriate to the age and size when you buy collars and leashes.

Larger breed dogs like Labradors need to have collars that you can adjust when they gain or lose weight so it doesn’t hurt them from it being so tight and constrictive. Labradors should also keep their hair trimmed around the collar because that’s how matting can occur when collars are too tight and can press the hair down to the point it grows into each other causing fur matting and skin irritation and can be a place where fleas and ticks can burrow and infections can show up and you wouldn’t even know it was there. So keeping the area free of hair and trimming every so often will make it comfortable for Labradors to wear collars. Labradors have a tendency to get thick around the neck area when they gain weight and when they lose they’ll have a lot of loose skin hanging so it’s ideal to fit the dog with collars at least 1-2 sizes up from their size so it’s easy to work with if they lose or gain so you’re not having to spend a lot of money on replacing collars when it’s not necessary and it makes the dog more comfortable with a properly fitted collar.
