HOW TO TRAIN YOUR COCKER SPANIEL

Author:
C. Covington

Training your new Cocker Spaniel will be easier if you keep a few points in mind:  they love routine;  they love praise;  and the positive will generate better results than the negative.  These factors will give your puppy the reassurance that you are dependable and trustworthy, and will assist greatly in the training process.

When you acquire your new puppy, you should begin by establishing a routine for him--  he needs to know such basics as where his bed is located, at what times he is supposed to sleep, and when and where he will eat.  In general, it is wise to schedule mealtimes for him--  morning, afternoon and nighttime.

As for teaching him what “potty” use is expected of him,  this is best done by keeping him confined to one small area in your home, not allowing him full run of your house or apartment;  if possible, his nighttime sleeping area should be no larger than to accommodate his bed--  for it is unlikely that a puppy will soil his own bedding if he is at all capable of restraining himself from doing so. It is a good idea to refrain from giving him water within a few hours of his bedtime.  While it is difficult for a very young puppy to achieve full continence, the best method of training him is to take him outside to one particular spot each time, and accustom him to understanding a brief, basic command for what he is supposed to do.  It should not take long before he is aware of his needs and able to communicate this to you by barking or whining at the door;  eventually, if you are in an area where it is possible, you may wish to install a “doggie door” so he can let himself out when necessary.

Before beginning to train your Cocker Spaniel, you need a clear idea of what you want him to do and what you don't want him to do.  Communicating these things to your new puppy is not as difficult as it may seem--  all it takes is patience, repetition, and a positive attitude.  You may be surprised at how easily he picks up on body language, tone of voice, and words and simple phrases that soon become familiar to him.  He will learn quickly what you are saying to him;  and, if practiced in a positive manner, will soon be responding appropriately.  Above all, be sure to never yell at or hit your puppy--  this will generate unnecessary fear, and will also make training him even more difficult.  Even an angry expression or tone of voice will be counterproductive;  a calm demeanor will produce the best results.

Training your new Cocker Spaniel does not need to be a difficult process--  keeping in mind the basic concepts of establishing a routine, praising him when he does what you wish him to do, and treating him in a kind, loving manner will make it an enjoyable experience for both you and your puppy.

Buying Pitbulls from Breeders
When you decide to buy a pitbull from a breeder, please make sure you have checked the reputation of the breeder.  A breeder who is more interested in your money than the happiness and well-being of the dog is not worth your time.  The breeders should care about whether or not you are right for the dog and the dog is right for you.  Some breeders even accept their return if you aren’t happy with your dog. The dog should be of good temper, healthy, and happy.  Some things to check for besides the reputation of the breeder are as follows:  their willingness to help support rescue centers, how often the females are bred, how the dog is housed, puppy immunizations, and willingness to help with future questions and guidance.  Purchasing a dog from a breeder has an advantage over purchasing from a pet shop because there’s less likelihood of disease and behavioral problems.  Inadequate socialization during the early stages of...
