The pitbull is seen as a threat in the eyes of many people because of their reputation as fighters and fierce guard dogs. While they do have positive traits, it is essential to also be aware of their negative traits before deciding to purchase or adopt a dog of this breed.
The pitbull is intimidating, becomes violent if attacked, can be vicious with strangers, is stubborn, aggressive, territorial, and jealous. This breed can also be dominant and can tend to chew up possessions for the first few years of their lives.
There are people who are so afraid of this animal, they will refuse to enter your home if it is known that you own a pitbull. They will balk at allowing their children to play at your home. They may even try to harm your animal because of their irrational fears.
Pitbulls respond best if trained from an early age, although it is possible to train them to some degree once they are older. You must asset yourself as the one in charge from the beginning.
Playing with your pitbull must also be done with care. Because it is an animal that enjoys rough play and is stubborn and strong, you have to be careful to not allow the dog to get carried away during play time. He or she must learn the acceptable limits, and you must learn them and respect them yourself. If you aren’t willing to take it, in other words…don’t dish it out. If you go over the boundaries, don’t blame the dog.
You must warn your guests that your dog deserves respect. A dog that is taught to guard and protect should not be later scolded for doing just that. Learn your dog’s limits and things it does not tolerate well. In fact, if you are using the dog for guarding purposes, it may be best for you to put the dog safely away in a comfortable refuge of its own when guests and visitors it isn’t taught to guard on a regular basis will be allowed access. If you know your guests will have children who will test the dog’s limits, your dog should be kept away from the children.
Many a bulldog has been unduly punished because a child was harmed after an owner or parent’s neglect. Always know the danger signs of your animal’s temper. The issue not only applies to children, it also applies to other animals. If your guests bring an animal with them, it shows respect to your dog to keep it away if you even suspect it will be a problem.
Some pitbulls simply do not want to share their humans, and they can cause harm to other animals or people simply by playing too rough.
