Do you want to take a chance on being able to care for your bulldog without pet insurance?  It is possible, but know that vet bills can become expensive and climb well into the thousands should the animal need extensive treatment at some point.

Your bulldog will not need the same tedious grooming as some other breeds of dogs, like the poodle.  With the poodle, hair removal in the ears must be done regularly to keep the dog from suffering constant ear infections.  But your bulldog will need immunizations, heartworm treatment, and dental attention.

What if your dog gets unexpectedly hit by a car?  What if it develops a cyst or cancer later in life?  What if it develops allergies or gets a snake bite or a spider bite?

The ASPCA offers pet health insurance.  The trick is to go to a licensed vet and submit a claim form, then get reimbursed in about 15 business days.  But there’s a deductible to meet, usually $100, and you need to know what type of coverage is offered and whether or not your breed of dog will be accepted.

There are pet insurance companies that refuse to cover certain breeds because they are on the dangerous breeds list.  An alternative would be to get a discount program, such as Pet Assure, which is not an insurance company but will allow discounts on prescriptions and some health services and supplies.  A wellness program is offered by many vets.

Homeowners insurance will not cover accidents or injuries caused by a dog on the dangerous dog list.  Some cities ban the ownership of pitbulls.

Pet insurance companies that do offer coverage can cost as much as $20 to $35 a month.  When you check around for pet insurance, know what to ask before you decide on a company.  Know when your plan would become effective, if certain vets must be used, if routine care is covered, annual check-ups, vaccines, and dental cleanings.  Know your payment options, if there’s a fee for making payments as opposed to paying in full, how to submit a claim and the processing time, whether the insurance would be paid to the vet or to you, if you can upgrade or downgrade the plan later, if there are age requirements.  Ask if you will be allowed to cancel at any time, what the allowances are for preexisting conditions, hereditary or congenital (inborn) conditions, and what is not covered.  Know if the lifestyle or species will affect the coverage.

Insurance companies to check out are:  Shelter Care, Pets Best, Pet Care, Embrace Pet, Veterinary Pet, Pets Health, Pet Insurance, and Quick Care Pet Insurance.

Taking proper care of your Yorkshire terrier
Yorkshire terriers, the little dogs with big dog attitudes, are just as night and day with the presumed and actual responsibilities when it comes to proper care. Due to the fact they are so very small, this actually causes a great deal more problems than a standard sized dog would have in terms of health. Small dog, small diet Yorkies do not need a great deal of food, and owners should be careful not to over feed them due to how prone they are to digestive problems and associated health issues.  Careful attention also needs to be paid to the mouth, with regular brushing to keep tooth decay and plaque at bay. Provide your Yorkshire terrier with a high quality dried food, as this will help to keep oral problems to a minimum as well as providing necessary nutrition, and monitor serving portions carefully to ensure that you are not over feeding him.  You should also careful not to spoil them with soft foods as Yorkies typically need dry food to keep their...
