  Physical facts of the Yorkie

Author:
C. Covington

Yorkshire Terriers are a long-haired breed with no undercoat, which means that they do not shed. Rather, their hair is like human hair in that it grows continuously and falls out rarely (only when brushed or broken). While this is a blessing to pet allergy sufferers, Yorkies definitely prefer to be warm and cozy, and are without a doubt not a breed to keep outside in a kennel.

Spinal problems can affect this breed, and can cause a reduction in mobility. Yorkies may have a tendency to tartar build-up on the teeth, but if regular attention is given to the teeth this should not be a serious problem. However as with most pure bred dogs, Yorkies are also prone to a great deal of hereditary and congenital diseases, which can be very costly.

Among these diseases are problems with the liver, brain, and skeletal structure. In addition, their small frame leaves them very prone to injury and difficulties giving birth. They are sensitive to many medications, and are typically very finicky eaters as well.

The Cocker Spaniel is naturally playful, loving, and eager to please.  Prior to him becoming adequately socialized, it is a good idea to keep him out of the range of boisterous children, as he may become either snappy or timid.  Although Cocker Spaniels are one of the...
