Showing and entering competitions with a Labrador

Author:
C. Covington

When Labradors are entered in shows and competitions the American Kennel Club and other organizations that establish guidelines for showing have a stellar criteria list for showing Labrador retrievers. The requirement for showing is that Labradors are purebred from a mother and father with similar backgrounds and upbringing. They also must fit the size common for their breed meaning they have to be free of debilitating diseases and disorders common to their breed. They must be well groomed and maintained from the time they’re taken from the litter after they’ve weaned on the mother for the first 4-8 weeks of their life. The qualities that a show judge looks for in a Labrador is the ability to be direct and to the point when given a command and not easily distracted especially when other dogs are present on the floor.

Having a sharp attention span is one of the most important traits of a show dog because losing focus that’s where key points are lost and that can hurt a dog’s score in certain events throughout the competition. Dogs that score too low are usually eliminated from the competition at whatever round they had advanced to. This is why owners who professionally show dogs usually spend a lot of money paying trainers to work on the dog’s focus and on vet bills to make sure that the dog is in excellent health for every show since health of a dog is very important because when the appearance section of the show comes and the judge inspects the dog they know how that particular breed should appear when they sit and stand anything that comes out of character for that dog can also cost major points since they look at how they walk and if Labradors who are prone to arthritis shows sluggishness in their step or appear to have issues with their joints in walking that can get them eliminated because dogs can score low if their appearance doesn’t appeal to the judge.

That’s why owners are on it from the moment they get a Labrador puppy to maintain it so that conditions that normally affect this breed can be lessened or eliminated with proper and timely maintenance. Show owners who don’t stay consistent in properly maintaining a Labrador are facing huge medical bills when they have to get problems fixed or have them on medicinal treatments which can make or break a dog’s showing ability. That’s why all shots and annual physicals should be done consistently and in a timely manner to avoid any small or huge problems later on that may have been overlooked during a doctor’s visit. That’s why showing Labradors carry a huge financial responsibility since these dogs are so prone to health issues if they’re not being kept well. This is why those who want to get into showing have to spend time with someone who’s done this so they know what it entails to show a Labrador since it’s a huge financial responsibility and time commitment.

Originations of the Yorkshire terrier breed
Yorkies are a byproduct of the Industrial Revolution in England.  Most believe they are the product of co-mingling Scottish and English terriers when many Scots were displaced by the Industrial Revolution and settled in England, but the origins of the Yorkie can only be rumor, since the original breeders kept their methods very guarded. Suspected original cross breeds By the looks of them, Scottish terriers were inevitably crossed with other types of terriers in order to produce the Yorkshire terrier, probably the English Black and Tan Toy Terrier, and the Skye terrier; it is also thought that at some stage the Maltese terrier was crossed with these breeds to help produce long coats. Unfortunately, no records exist to confirm these crosses (probably because of the poor level of literacy in these times), but a great deal is known about the type of people who bred them, and there is no doubt that early breeders had a very clear idea of the type of dogs they...
