THE SPECIAL TRAITS OF COCKER SPANIELS

Author:
C. Covington

The Cocker Spaniel is one of the best breeds of dog, in terms of temperament.  Although each has his own distinct, individual personality, by nature they are one of the friendliest types of dog, and will usually interact well with both humans and other pets.  If you are seeking a pet who will always be glad to see you, and “gets along well with others,” a Cocker Spaniel is your ideal choice--  he is a very cheerful, sensitive, energetic dog.   However, while his sweet, accomodating disposition is a part of a Cocker Spaniel's natural temperament, socializing him at an early age will ensure that he will reach his optimum potential and avoid later shyness. The Cocker Spaniel is naturally playful, loving, and eager to please.  Prior to him becoming adequately socialized, it is a good idea to keep him out of the range of boisterous children, as he may become either snappy or timid.

Although Cocker Spaniels are one of the most active breeds of dog, he is equally suited to apartment life or living in a house with a yard.  Needing only a moderate amount of exercise, he will be happy and healthy if taken on once or twice daily walks and occasional romps.  His natural small size is also a factor for those who are considering a pet to live in their apartment, as a Cocker Spaniel is a very “compact” pet.

The Cocker Spaniel is one of the most intelligent breeds of dog--  he is easily teachable, when instructing him in commands for what is and is not wanted in his behavior;  and readily picks up the ability to understand what is meant by his owner's commands.

Not as well-known a fact, the Cocker Spaniel has excellent hunting instincts, and can be trained to be a skilled gun-dog, as he will point and fetch game, as well as being a house pet.  He is the smallest member of the Sporting Dog group. Another lesser-known fact is that most Cocker Spaniels love to swim, and are excellent swimmers.

Cocker Spaniels are also a beautiful breed of dog, and can be found in a variety of colors.  Having long, luxurious coats, the most popular colors for this breed are buff and black;  but can also be found in silver, cream,  red, chocolate, sable, blue merle, parti, tri-color, and with open markings or closed markings.  For registered purebreds, the colorings and markings of Cocker Spaniels are regulated.

AN OVERVIEW FOR FINDING A COCKER SPANIEL BREEDER
If you wish to purchase a purebred Cocker Spaniel, your first stop should be the American Kennel Club.  The AKC is one of the best resources which can assist you in locating reputable breeders, honest pricing of these dogs, and a host of other important information.  While the AKC cannot ethically advise you to purchase your Cocker Spaniel from any one particular breeder, it does offer information about breeder locater services and breed clubs which can, in turn, point you toward listings of breeders. The state-by-state listings on the breeder referral list are all members of, but not endorsed by, the American Spaniel Club.  You can find this listing at http://www.asc-cockerspaniel.org/breed/breeders.html .  When requesting information from a breeder, it is important to remember to find out if the puppy has had its shots, has been dewormed, and has had a health examination.  Other factors to consider are whether they are registered with the...
