  Temperament of the Akita

Author:
C. Covington

Although the Akita can grow to a rather large size and can be fierce, they are surprisingly delicate creatures.  Emotionally they require a great deal of attention and companionship.  Once their needs are met, however, they will serve as a loyal friend and guardian over you and your family.  The important thing is to remember that while Akitas are lovable, affectionate animals, they are animals nonetheless.

In the wild, an Akita would be a member of a pack, or family of other dogs.  As all dogs are bred from wolves, they share this primitive instinct.  For this reason, an Akita will not live well if kept outside, as a “backyard dog”.  It will begin to feel like it has been separated from its pack—you and your family—which can cause anger and frustration to build.  Akitas enjoy spending time indoors surrounded by loved ones and are wonderful family dogs.  They can get lonely very easily when isolated.

As a natural hunter, the Akita enjoys stalking and capturing prey.  This instinct can be exercised by allowing time to play games with him, even as simple as a game of fetch.  This will help the Akita fulfill its need to work and have a purpose in life.  If the dog is unable to maintain this activity, they can become destructive toward your belongings and aggressive toward other pets in the household.

The Akita, like many dogs, can be very fearful of loud noises.  This is especially true when an adult dog hears a loud noise, such as a gun shot, for the first time.  The best way to acclimate an Akita to loud noises is to start when the dog is a puppy.  This is an especially good idea if your home is near a loud location, like an airport, train track or even a gun range.  Subjecting the Akita to loud noises before it has become used to them will make for a very nervous animal.

One word that is practically synonymous with Akita is “Loyalty”.  Once this dog has begun to trust you and accepted you as a leader, it will remain your loyal companion for the rest of its life.  The Akita makes its main goal in life to look out for its family and that is the most important thing to them.  They form strong friendships with all the members of a household and never forget them.

Although the Akita is a family-oriented dog and favors being part of a group, it is also capable of being very independent.  The breed is one most likely to survive on its own, regardless of human assistance.  Their intelligence allows them to learn from experiences, therefore keeping them from making reckless mistakes that could lead to injury or death.

It is important that anyone considering owning a dog learn all the facts of that breed’s temperament.  The Akita’s sharp wit, sincere affection, loyalty and courage make for an ideal pet, working dog, show dog and friend.  Once the dog has become familiar with you and your family, both parties will share mutual enjoyment of each other.  However, as with all animals, it is important to respect their natural instincts and behavior.

Breeding Yorkies
Although there are dogs that are much more difficult to breed than the Yorkshire Terrier, their small size make it necessary to be very knowledgeable about breeding.  Unlike other breeds, which have fur, the Yorkshire has hair that is growing constantly. However they do not have an undercoat, so they tend to get matted less easily. Although the coloring of this breed is black and tan to begin with, the black areas turn a steely blue color as the dog gets older. Either way they always look elegant as ever, and can provide many excellent years of showing as this breed typically lives to about 12 or 16 years of age. Be sure when you purchase a Yorkie or when you are looking to breed that you obtain references and check around with shelters and rescue groups. You wouldn’t want the good health and good name of your Yorkshire terrier to be tarnished by one small mishap, or worse, have puppies with so many medical problems they are not valuable to anyone....
