The Not So Positive Traits of the Pomeranian That You May Want to Consider

Author:
C. Covington

The Pomeranian is a very popular small breed dog. This breed is very desirable as a pet. At the same time, there are certain traits of the Pomeranian that you need to be aware of, if you are considering this breed as a pet. Sometimes it isn't really a negative trait of the Pomeranian that might make this breed the less than optimal choice, but instead just a result of your particular circumstances.

For example, if you have small children, the Pomeranian likely wouldn't be a good fit for you. Children tend to move quickly and unexpectedly and make loud noises. This tends to stress Pomeranians greatly, which could even lead to defensive biting. They begin to feel overwhelmed and that can lead to a shy pet and in certain cases biting.

Here are some other possible negative traits that you need to consider.

1.   Pomeranians are fragile. Many people purchase a toy breed without fully understanding the fragile nature of these pets. These small dogs can easily be injured or even killed accidentally. Pomeranians, and other small dogs, have been accidentally killed simply by being stepped on or being sat upon when sleeping under a blanket or sheet.

To make matters worse, Pomeranians can kill themselves by jumping off the back of a sofa or chair. Larger dogs could grab this small dog by the neck and kill it, even if they were simply playing with the dog and not trying to hurt it. As a result of all of this, owning a Pomeranian requires constant supervision so that you can protect your pet. Generally, Pomeranians should be kept indoors or within a fenced yard. If you allow your Pomeranian to walk around outdoors, they need to be kept on a leash.

 2. Pomeranians have a mind of their own. That may not necessarily sound like a bad thing but they can be manipulative. You must be consistent and firm with them. They don't need drastic discipline, but they do need consistent correction so that they do not get confused. As a breed they are not submissive, so as a pet owner, you have to be willing to put in the necessary time and energy into training.

3. Pomeranians need a good deal of grooming. Their thick coats have a tendency to get matted so they need regular brushing and combing. Occasionally they also need their hair trimmed. You have to be willing to put in the time to do this.

4. Pomeranians shed heavily. If you are going to own a Pomeranian, this is one of the first things that you need to know. Without question you will find their hair all over your belongings. Prepare yourself to vacuum constantly!

For the most part Pomeranians make an excellent pet. As you can see though, there are certain factors involved in choosing this breed. Depending on your circumstances and willingness to work with your Pomeranian, this will determine your success.

Tear Staining - Causes and Cures
Tear staining in Maltese dogs can be due to genetic, health, and diet problems or because of fleas. It is important to get tear staining under control. Removing it will do no good as it will only come back and may even get worse. When the dog's facial hair becomes wet from excess tearing it becomes a breeding ground for bacteria and yeast. One of the most common yeast infections is Ptyrosporin or Red Yeast which causes a deep reddish brown stain in the corner of Maltese eyes. Low grade bacterial infections in the tear ducts are also common and may cause excess tearing and staining. It is not unusual to find a Maltese that has completely clogged tear ducts which will need to be irrigated by a veterinarian. About 20 percent of small dogs such as the Maltese may be born with lower tear ducts that are physically closed and will require surgery to open them. Sometimes an ear infection can cause tearing and staining within the Maltese breed. Care needs to be taken to...
